Rocket Lab Unveils 'GHOST': The Portable Spaceport System Revolutionizing Global Launch Access
The ability to launch rockets into orbit or for critical suborbital tests has long been constrained by the immobility of traditional spaceports. These complex facilities, requiring vast infrastructure and specific geographical conditions, limit responsiveness and global accessibility. However, a significant shift in this paradigm is underway with Rocket Lab's unveiling of a revolutionary portable spaceport system dubbed 'GHOST,' short for "Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology." This innovation promises to redefine the landscape of space access, offering unprecedented flexibility for national security missions and frequent launch campaigns.
GHOST: Launching Anywhere, Anytime
Announced on August 10, Rocket Lab representatives confirmed that GHOST is engineered to convert the company’s established Electron and HASTE rockets into a 'launch-anywhere, launch-anytime' capability. What makes GHOST particularly remarkable is its ingenious design: the entire system, encompassing complete rockets, essential launch infrastructure, sophisticated ground support, and intricate range control systems, is packaged entirely within standard shipping containers. This compact and self-contained design allows for rapid deployment to virtually any location worldwide, a game-changer for operations demanding swift and adaptable access to space. As Peter Beck, Rocket Lab founder and CEO, articulated during the company's second-quarter 2026 earnings call, "We've mastered the art of building launch sites. Now we're making them deployable worldwide."
The Workhorses: Electron and HASTE
At the heart of GHOST's immediate capabilities are Rocket Lab's proven launch vehicles:

- Electron: This 59-foot-tall (18-meter-tall) expendable orbital rocket is Rocket Lab's primary workhorse for delivering small satellites. Since its test flight debut in 2017, Electron has successfully completed 83 missions, providing dedicated and reliable rides to the final frontier for numerous payloads.
- HASTE (Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron): A suborbital variant of the Electron, HASTE is specifically designed for customers to test various technologies within the demanding hypersonic flight environment. It first flew in June 2023 and has since conducted nine missions, most recently in June of the current year, proving its value in critical research and development.
GHOST's ability to mobilize these rockets means that specialized testing or urgent satellite deployments are no longer tied to fixed launch complexes, dramatically enhancing strategic capabilities.
Expanding Rocket Lab's Global Footprint
Currently, Rocket Lab operates from two primary launch sites: one on New Zealand's North Island and another at Wallops Island, Virginia. The company recently announced plans to expand its operations to Alaska's Pacific Spaceport Complex. GHOST, however, represents an exponential leap in this expansion strategy. It was developed, according to Beck, to meet the needs of a HASTE customer who expressed a desire for Rocket Lab to be "a little bit more mobile." This customer-driven innovation will allow Rocket Lab to deploy its planned pads at the Pacific Spaceport Complex using GHOST technology, illustrating its immediate practical application and long-term vision for sovereign orbital launch capabilities and advanced missile defense testing.
The Road Ahead: Neutron Rocket Development
Beyond the immediate impact of GHOST, Rocket Lab continues to advance its next-generation launch vehicle, Neutron. Positioned to be significantly larger and more powerful than Electron, Neutron will also feature partial reusability, with its first stage designed for recovery and reflight—a design philosophy echoing SpaceX's Falcon 9. While the first flight, initially targeted for 2024, has seen some delays—common in complex rocket development—Peter Beck confirmed substantial progress. "Every part of the vehicle has now seen significant testing," he stated during the earnings call, acknowledging necessary tweaks but emphasizing a transition into final checkout and assembly. Rocket Lab remains on target to deliver the first Neutron rocket to its Wallops pad in the fourth quarter of this year, signaling a major milestone for the company's future heavy-lift capabilities and continued innovation in the global space industry.
