Pioneering the International Space Station Era

Fincke's tenure at NASA saw him at the forefront of the International Space Station (ISS) program. Following intensive astronaut-candidate training, he served with the Astronaut Office Station Operations Branch in Russia, acting as ISS CAPCOM and crew procedures team lead, gaining invaluable insights into orbital operations before his first flight.

His inaugural journey into orbit came aboard the Soyuz TMA-4 mission to the ISS in 2004. As science officer and flight engineer for Expedition 9, Fincke completed four challenging extravehicular activities (EVAs), or spacewalks, contributing directly to the station's assembly and maintenance. Four years later, he returned to the ISS via Soyuz TMA-13, this time taking command for Expedition 18. During this pivotal period, he added two more EVAs to his record and oversaw preparations for the station to accommodate larger six-person crews, a critical step in expanding human presence in low Earth orbit.

In 2011, Fincke made his third trip to the ISS aboard the final launch of NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavour on the STS-134 mission. As a mission specialist and robotic-arm operator, he was instrumental in the installation of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), a groundbreaking instrument designed to hunt for dark matter and cosmic rays, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of cosmic phenomena. His three EVAs on this mission marked the official completion of ISS orbital assembly and were the last spacewalks ever performed by a space shuttle crew, cementing his place in space history.

Shaping the Future: Commercial Crew and a Final Mission

From 2014, he served as chief of the Astronaut Office’s Commercial Crew Branch, where he was deeply involved in the development and testing of the SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner spacecraft. He later served on the prime crew for Boeing’s Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission from January 2019 to June 2022, before transitioning to the backup crew.

Fincke's most recent mission, Crew-11, launched to the ISS in August 2025, where he was slated to command Expedition 74. However, his mission, along with that of his crewmates, was cut short due to an unexpected medical issue. While preparing for what would have been his tenth career EVA, a medical concern arose, leading NASA to prioritize the crew's return to Earth. Fincke, later identified as the affected crew member, experienced a temporary inability to speak. He has since made a full recovery, underscoring the inherent risks and demanding nature of human spaceflight even for the most experienced astronauts.
